Department History
Established in 1963 as part of Punjabi University, Patiala, the Department of Mathematics has a rich history of academic excellence. Initially, it was one of the six postgraduate departments at the university. Over the years, the department has produced numerous mathematicians who have made significant contributions in various government, semi-government, and private institutes and universities.
In its early years, the department offered M.Sc. and M.Phil programs in Mathematics. Currently, the department offers a range of courses including Master of Science (Honours) in Mathematics, Master of Science (Honours) in Mathematics (Applied Mathematics and Computing), Multi Disciplinary Five Year Integrated in Mathematics and Computing. The department also actively engages in research activities, providing opportunities for scholars to pursue Ph.D. degrees.
To date, more than 120 students have obtained M.Phil degrees and more than 50 research scholars have successfully completed their Ph.D. degrees from the department. Adapting to the changing dynamics of the modern world, the department has introduced several applied courses such as Mathematical Methods, Mathematical Modeling, Operational Research, Advanced Numerical Analysis, Meta-heuristic Techniques, Evolutionary Algorithms and Soft Computing. Moreover, it has incorporated modern pure mathematics subjects like Category Theory, which find wide applications in fields such as physics, computers, artificial intelligence and beyond.
The Department of Mathematics has consistently emphasized both teaching and research. As a testament to its scholarly endeavors, the department has published over 500 research papers in prestigious national and international journals, furthering the body of knowledge in the field of mathematics.
ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ 1962 ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਗਣਿਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ 1963 ਵਿਚ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। ਕੁੱਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਛੇ ਪੋਸਟ ਗੈ੍ਜੂਏਟ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਗਣਿਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਸੀ। ਗਣਿਤ ਡਿਪਾਰਟਮੈਂਟ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਗਣਿਤ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਵੱਖ–ਵੱਖ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ, ਅਰਧ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਈਵੇਟ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ/ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,
ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਐਮ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਐਮ.ਫਿਲ ਕੋਰਸ ਸਨ। ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਸਮੇਂ, ਵਿਭਾਗ ਐਮ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ. (ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਸ), ਐਮ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ (ਅਪਲਾਈਡ ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਸ ਐਂਡ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਿੰਗ) ਬੀ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ (ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਸ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਿੰਗ) ਅਤੇ ਬੀ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ. (ਆਨਰਜ਼ ਇੰਨ ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਸ) ਕੋਰਸ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਵਿਭਾਗ ਖੋਜ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੀ.ਐਚ.ਡੀ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
120 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਐਮ.ਫਿਲ ਦੀ ਡਿਗਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ 21 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਖੋਜ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੀ.ਐਚ.ਡੀ. ਡਿਗਰੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਬਦਲਦੇ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਨਾਲ, ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਕੋਰਸ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਲ ਢੰਗ, ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਲ ਮਾਡਲਿੰਗ, ਅਪਰੇਸ਼ਨਲ ਰਿਸਰਚ, ਅਡਵਾਂਸਡ ਨਿਊਮੈਰਿਕਲ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣ, ਮੈਟਾ–ਹਾਇਰਿਸਟਿਕ ਤਕਨੀਕਜ਼, ਈਵੇਲੂਸ਼ਨਲ ਅਲਗੋਰਿਥਮ, ਸਾਫਟ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਿੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਟਾਗਿਰੀ ਥਿਊਰੀ ਜਿਸਦੀ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ, ਫਿਜਿਕਸ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਈ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋੜ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗਣਿਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਪੜਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਖੋਜ ‘ਤੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੇਂਦਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਜੋਂ, ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧੀ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ–ਵੱਖ ਰਸਾਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੁਆਰਾ 250 ਤੋਂ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਖੋਜ ਪੇਪਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

NBHM Fellowship Recipients: Two of our students have been awarded the prestigious National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Fellowship, recognizing their exceptional academic achievements.
Recognition in Science Exhibition: The Department of Mathematics was awarded the second prize in the Exhibition on Health through Science, jointly organized by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Patiala Chapter and Punjab Science Congress.
Alumni Success: The department takes pride in the success of its alumni, with one of them holding a faculty position at the esteemed Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Many other students have pursued their doctoral degrees from renowned institutions such as IISER, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi, and IMSc Chennai.

Celebrating National Mathematics Day in Honor of Srinivasa Ramanujan: The Department of Mathematics at Punjabi University, Patiala, annually organizes an online event on 22nd December, National Mathematics Day, to honor the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The event aims to pay tribute to Ramanujan's contributions to mathematics through various activities such as quizzes, competitions, seminars, and interactive sessions.
Visitor Programme Lecture Series: Role of Mathematics in Transmission of Data Securely and Accurately: The Department of Mathematics at Punjabi University, Patiala, hosted a lecture series inviting experts to discuss the importance of mathematics in secure and accurate data transmission. This series emphasized mathematical principles and algorithms in data encryption and cybersecurity, supported by esteemed organizations and felicitated by distinguished guests.
International Mother Tongue Day: Lecture on "Matlab" in Punjabi Language: To celebrate International Mother Tongue Day, the department organized a lecture conducted entirely in Punjabi on the subject of "Matlab." The expert speaker introduced the concepts of Matlab, its applications in mathematical modeling, and the career opportunities it offers in data science and quantitative techniques in prominent companies.
Educational Tour to Dalhousie and McLeodganj with YUVA Tourism Club: In collaboration with the YUVA Tourism Club, the department arranges a four-day educational tour to Dalhousie and McLeodganj. This tour, aligned with the Ministry of Tourism's guidelines, provides students with cultural exposure, experiences, and practical knowledge beyond the classroom, fostering personal growth and promoting national and international integration.
Recognition at the Global Level: The name of Dr. Parveen Lata, Professor in Mathematics was Enlisted in the global list of top 2% scientists with maximum citations in the year 2020 and 2021 released by Stanford University, USA.
Recognition at ICO 2023 Conference: Dr. Mukhdeep Singh Manshahia's Special Session Leadership Award: Dr. Mukhdeep Singh Manshahia, from Punjabi University Patiala, received the Special Session Leadership Award at the ICO 2023 Conference held in Hua Hin, Thailand. This recognition acknowledges Dr. Manshahia's contributions in bringing together researchers and experts in the field of intelligent computing and optimization, enhancing the university's reputation in research and academic excellence.
